It must have been an accident the first time i heard Boston's Smokin 45 played at 33, but oh what a perfect accident it turned out to be. After that, listening to this record at the wrong speed became another thing that my friends and i did. Ahh, simpler times they were. First- smoke a joint in the garage, Second- go upstairs and jam out to some Boston and laugh our asses off...
We tried other records at the wrong speed. We tried everything we had at least once, but no other song lent itself to this treatment as well as Smokin. The punk stuff i listened to at the time was fast too, the Misfits for example. When slowed down the tempo was right but the guitars were so low that it was unlistenable... Smokin is a fast song in the key of A, 45 to 33 slows it down just enough to really bring out that 3/4 boogie and give it a serious groove. The guitars are right on the edge of being seriously heavy and ridiculous. And it's still not even six minutes long...
The 'Stoner Rock' genre as we know it today didn't quite exist when i was in high school. It was in it's infant stages anyway, so this is what my friends and i did when we got tired of listening to Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.
