Sam
I'm on a garage rock kick. Why the hell not? I've got the songs, there's no reason not to spin em. This here's the flip of the Castaways hit 'Liar Liar.' Definitely not as good as the top side, but not a bad little ditty either.
This one goes out to the bartender at Cheers.
Enjoy!

Somebody stole my C.B.
C.B. radio- The 70s truck drivers internet. All the information you ever need, right there at the push of a button.
There's a serious lack of knowledge to be had on the inter-googles about Billy Webb and/or this record. All i could find were old ebay listings, and they don't tell you squat...
I bought two 45s on the Ad-Korp label at a record show a few weeks back. As usual i grabbed them because they were dirt cheap, both had funny titles, and were on this little indie label that i had never seen. Goof ball 70s novelty country. Kind of a low rent Jerry Reed schtick goin on here. Good for a few chuckles.

Tonkobushi rock and roll
Olde timey racism. They just don't make em like this anymore. I think most Americans would rather bury stuff like this and forget it ever happened. Like Uncle Remus and those World War Two era Bugs Bunny cartoons. Some of us however, like finding these artifacts and giving them back. You can't forget the past...
I saw this tune posted on one of the other blogs i follow, but it was probably over a year ago at this point. Here it is again.

The Crazy Otto
Sometimes I just grab crap like this because it's got an interesting looking label. I have regular stuff on the Bell label, but with a title like The Crazy Otto by Buddy and his Pals? Could be anything.
It is what it is, but what the hell. For ten cents, i'd say i got my moneys worth...

Greatest Love
The sizzlin bacon noise adds a certain charm to an old tune like this. It's almost like the record itself is saying- I've been beat up and kicked around and might be a little bit bruised and scarred, but i survived, and i'm gonna keep on keepin on in spite of all the shit that's been thrown my way...

Who's on first
A fine selection here to wrap up a weeks worth of baseball themed sounds. This will be the last one, i promise. After this we'll get back to our regularly scheduled programming of random ass whatever crap that strikes my fancy on any given day.
This one's a pretty cool mystery record. Blank white labels with hand written titles. On the flip side is a Telly Savalas tune- I'm not even making this up. Hear it HERE. A long time record shop owner that i used to know (an old dude who has run a place since punk was actually relevant) told me that they used to do one-off 45s like this for jukeboxes. Songs that employees and/or barflys wanted to hear, but that weren't actually available on 45. How true is it? Who knows- the guy sold more reefer than he did vinyl... I'm not stating any facts here, you just take what you hear and pass it on. Nice guy though, i don't think he would have lied to me. So this is what it is. What the hell was whoever had the record made thinking is what i want to know? Abbot and Costello and Telly Savalas? Such an unlikely pairing. We'll never know. I'm just glad that i found it and gave it a good home.
It's nothing more than the classic 'Who's on first' routine which, if you ask me, is a timeless bit of comedy from a bygone era. Still makes me laugh out loud every time i listen to it...
Hear it again for the first time yourself.
Enjoy!

Move over Babe, Here comes Henry
On this day: April 8th, 1974 Henry 'Hank' Aaron hit his 715th home run in Atlanta, breaking the record previously held by Babe Ruth. This song was released the previous year in anticipation of the milestone. I don't know his actual stats, but Aaron must have only been one or two away at the end of the '73 season since he got it done in what was likely the first week or so of the '74 season.
Bill Slayback, the singer of the song, was a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers in 1974. Ernie Harwell was the legendary long-time Tigers announcer who passed away in 2010.
Check out this site for a little more detailed info.
This one has been on my ever-growing, never-ending mental wish list for quite a while now. I finally found my copy last winter and have been saving it for this very occasion.

Talkin Baseball
This song truly was a brilliant concept, just very poorly executed. Sooo bad. Terry Cashman wrote the original Talkin Baseball as an homage to the all time greats of the game. Over the next several years he did individual versions for most of, if not all (i'm not 100% sure) of baseballs major league teams using the same backing music and vocal melody. The versions i've heard all have great lyrics too, specific to each team. The only problem is that the song itself is a total dud. It's just a shame is what it is. A damn shame.
Oh well, here it is anyway- The Cubs version.

White Sox Gettin Down
Last summer i found a bag of more than 80 of these at a church garage sale on the south side. I think i gave the guy seven bucks for all of them.
Any Sox fans out there need a copy? Shoot me a message...
Last year i had the good fortune of going to a meet & greet autograph session at the ball park. I got Ozzie Guillen to sign two copies for me (he was on the '85 team), and he held up the line to tell me all about his vintage juke box in his home in Venezuela. Not even making this up. He was excited when i gave him two copies of his own. He said "I can't wait to listen to this," and i could tell that he actually meant it. I also got Harold Baines and Greg walkers autographs (both on the '85 team as well), and gave them their own copies. None of them remembered it.
I've tried on a few occasions to find information on Wayne Mayfield and/or this record, but the internets come up short. I would like to say your welcome to all White Sox fans out there, as i am single-handedly responsible for giving this one back to all of cyberspace. This song went unheard for 25 years or so, and if i hadn't rescued these records, it would still be long forgotten... You are welcome. You are all very welcome.
Some White Sox fan page on Tumblr stole my label scan and MP3 after the first time i posted it last summer, and who knows where it was linked from there. We'll see where it ends up after this post.

The Old Ball Game
It's opening day!
Even though i probably wont even see any of the games, to celebrate i will be posting all baseball themed songs for the next week.
This here is the b-side of the Go-Go- White Sox song that they play after every home win. I've been looking for a reasonably priced copy of this record for a few years now. Last time i saw a copy it was going for fifty bucks! I scored this one on ebay for half that from a seller in Florida. Someone who doesn't live in Chicago probably didn't fully understand the significance of the song.
I rarely spend big money like this on records, but i had to make an exception in this case. Glad i did too, because this B-side is (as far as my half-assed searches go) seemingly unavailable elsewhere on the old intertubes. So there's that...
Enjoy the game!
