The Royaltones were from Allen Park, Michigan and formed in late 1956 with leader/saxophone player George katsakis AKA George Kaye, & had their biggest hit in 1958 with "Poor Boy" on Jubilee Records. The group were always popular in the Detroit area from 1957-1967, & backed up some well-known Detroit legends, including Soul singer Gino Washington & Del Shannon. They added Guitarist Dennis Coffey in 1964, & nearly had another big national hit with "Our Faded Love" on Mala Records. One more single charted in 1959 ("Flamingo Express" on Goldisc Records, run by George Goldner, & reportedly Mafia involvement with Goldner's partner-in-crime, the notorious Morris Levy)before disbanding in 1967 after issuing 8 45 RPM Records. Dennis Coffey went on to form the Detroit Guitar Band with Motown Bassist Bob Babbitt, & hit the Top 40 in 1971 with "Scorpio" & "Tarus" on the Sussex Label.Kaye went on to co-form the Attrack label with Gino Washington in 1968, issuing local records in Detroit well into the 70's.
